Cambodia to host first Phnom Penh Half Marathon

PHNOM PENH, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia will host first ever Phnom Penh Half Marathon next month, aiming to attract more visitors around the globe to the city, a senior Olympic Committee official said Wednesday.

Vath Chamroeun, secretary general of National Olympic Committee, said the 21-kilometer Phnom Penh Half Marathon will be held on June 18 with an expectation of 2,000 runners.

He said, to date, more than 600 runners were already registered to the committee.

"The purpose for organizing the first Phnom Penh Half Marathon is to draw attentions to foreign visitors to visit our capital city of Phnom Penh," Vath Chamroeun said.

He said the event is a friendly sport which is deserved in naming it as "green or environment sports" in Phnom Penh.

The Phnom Penh Half Marathon will be organized on the same day of Her Majesty the Queen Monineath's Birthday and the coincides with 117th anniversary of the World's Olympic Day and is opened for all runners interested in the event around the globe, he added.

The participation fee is 15 U.S dollars per head for expatriates working in Cambodia while 25 U.S. dollar for those coming from foreign countries.

Vath Chamroeun said Cambodia has organized a routine International Half Marathon in front of Angkor Wat Temple in Siem Reap province for already 15 years, but has never done so in Phnom Penh.

Through the exposing of the Phnom Penh Half Marathon-the world will better know Phnom Penh as the Country's capital.

Last International Half Marathon in Angkor Wat attracted 4,050 runners from 53 countries, while there were only 964 runners coming from 14 countries when such event began in 1996.
