Prime Minister Hun Sen on 1st April went to Anti-Corruption Unit to personally declare his assets as required by the Anti-Corruption Laws and has urged his colleagues to do the same before the 7th April deadline.

Mr. Hun Sen's declaration was handed to Mr. Om Yintieng, head of ACU, in a sealed envelope in front of reporters. He told reporters that he did not owe any people any money and no one owes him any money. In other words, he is debt free.

Although the asset declaration is confidential, Hun Sen told reporters he earned a monthly salary of 4,600,000 riel ($1,150). Despite a meagre salary, he said he won't starve to death as his children will support him financially. "What has stated today will require me to declare my assets again in 2 years time. It means that from the 1st of January to the 31st of January 2013, I have to come back to declare my assets again. I think that my assets in the next two years will not increase, but are likely to decrease. Other than my salary, I do not have any other incomes. But I will get (financial) supports from my children. They will not let me starve to death", he said.

But the claim raised eyebrows among observers.

"There is an imbalance between the size of his salary and his current wealth," Mam Sitha, president of the Cambodia Independent Anti-Corruption Committee, a non-governmental group, told AFP.

Critics and observers claimed that Mr. Hun Sen and family owned many properties and have huge business interests in the country. Beside his two well-known mansions near the Independent Monument and his Tuol Krosaing Compound in Takhmao, Mr. Hun Sen and his family are rumoured to have big shares in Canadia Bank, which owned many development sites throughout the country, including Koh Pich Island Development, Prek Leap Satellite City, Bayon Radio and TV as well as 7NG which was involved in the forced evictions of people from the Dey Krohorm community.

Hun Sen is doing this for a political stunt, it is a joke. He said he earns only about $1,150 per month, but he owned too many luxury palaces and mansions. He is the richest man in Cambodia, yet he said earns less than $15,000 a year. This is bullshit.

做賊心虛,自欺欺人,此地無銀三百兩。獨眼獸又耍新花招了。但還有好一窩死不去的本地華人(潮州會館為首)偏要給牠背書。
可恥!可悲!

金邊人。

Here is the Google translation to Chinese comment at 10:36 AM:

"Guilty conscience, self-deception, service trades. One-eyed beast and playing a new trick. But there is not a good pot of dead local Chinese (Chiu Chow-led) chosen to give it an endorsement.
Shame! Sad!

Phnom Penh people."
