The Phnom Penh Court has summoned opposition leader Sam Rainsy to appear before the court on 5th April to answer charges of defamation in response to a defamation lawsuit lodged by Foreign Minister Hor Namhong for his comment in 2008 which alleged Mr. Hor Namhong was complicit in the Khmer Rouge killing fields when Mr. Hor was chief of Boeng Trabek Re-Education in the mid 1970s.
During the speech in front of the parliament in 2008, Mr. Sam Rainsy was alleged to have accused Mr. Hor Namhong and Finance Minister Keat Chhon as having played as part in the killing fields. From 1975-1979, Mr. Hor Namhong was one of trusted Khmer Rouge officials and became chief of Boeng Trabek Re-Education Centre for a few years. Mr. Keat Chhon was advisor to Khmer Rouge Prime Minister Pol Pot during the time.
Mr. Sam Rainsy is currently living in exile after being convicted to 12 years imprisonment for uprooting six border stakes in 2009 on the Khmer-Vietnamese border after he accused the Vietnamese authority of planting them inside Khmer territory.
