A 45-year-old Korean man was arrested on suspicion of murdering his Cambodian wife to cash in on insurance estimated at 1.2 billion won ($1 million), police said Wednesday.
According to staff at the Gangwon Police Station, the suspect set fire to his apartment after sedating his 25-year-old wife with a dose of sleeping pills, resulting in her death, in March 2010.
He is suspected of having planned the murder for a long time to claim the insurance money, possibly since shortly after their marriage in 2008, the police said.
“He took out six life insurance policies on his wife between April and December in 2009, and made the fire look like an accident by putting inflammable material around a heater in the room,” the police said.
Right after the fire, he received 120 million won from one of the insurance companies. But the police reinvestigated the case as traces of sleeping pills were found during an autopsy of the wife’s body.
“We also found it suspicious for a man without a job to take out several life insurance policies on his wife making about 500,000 won payments every month,” a police officer said.
He confessed to spending all the insurance on gambling but denied the allegation of murdering his wife, a police officer said.
