Cambodian soldiers attacked a Thai outpost at Phu Ma Khua in the disputed border area several times overnight, but were repulsed, army spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said on Wednesday.

Col Sansern said there were no Thai casualties.

The Cambodian attack began about 8pm, when they threw hand grenades at the Thai position in the Phu Ma Khua area, on disputed land in Si Sa Ket's Kantharalak district.

About 9pm, Cambodian soldiers tried to break through the fence around the post, but were repelled by Thai soldiers throwing hand grenades.

Cambodian soldiers probed the Thai position again about 10pm with more hand grenades, and the Thais retaliated in kind.

About 2am on Wednesday, Cambodian forces renewed the attack, this time directing machinegun fire, mortar rounds and rocket-propelled grenades at the Thai position. The Thai troops returned fire and pinned down the attackers, he said.

Cambodians attacked again, unsuccessfully, between 3.50am and 4am.

Sporadic exchanges of fire continued until 5.25am on Wednesday.

Residents of Phum Sro village fled for their safety, seeking shelter throughout the night in temporary bunkers.

There were no casualties on the Thai side, which held on to the position, Col Sansern said.

The army spokesman said the attacks showed Cambodian forces were paying no attention to the United Nations Security Council's call for a permanent ceasefire.

The Cambodian troops' intention had clearly been to take the Thai position, he said.

Si Sa Ket governor Somsak Suwansucharit has urged villagers along the border to rush to shelters if they hear gunfire.

Board of Investment secretary-general Atchaka Sibunruang said the BoI has postponed indefinitely a planned investment road show in Cambodia until the border situation has returned to normal.

The BoI had planned to take Thai investors looking for opportunities in Cambodia on a tour there later this month, Mrs Atchaka said.

“The road show has been postponed indefinitely because Thai investors were worried about their safety,” she said.

A large number of investors had earlier expressed interested in the trip, particularly in the garment industry, she said.

Thai businesses have already invested in the retail, hotel and telecommunications sectors in Cambodia.

On domestic investment, the BoI secretary-general said foreign investors understand that the ongoing political conflict in the country is just part of the democratic system.

“The prime minister’s promise to call an early general election in the first half of the year has not caused them any concerns,” said Mrs Atchaka.

She was confident applications for investment privileges would reach the 400 billion baht target this year.

Applications for last year totalled 470 billion baht.
