Another police chief was arrested on Sunday 16th January in connections with the arrests of other police chiefs in the last two weeks on drug-related charges.
Chea Leng, former director of anti-narcotic office of Ministry of Interior, who was a subordinate of Lt--Gen. Moek Dara (pictured) who was arrested on 12th January, has been arrested on Sunday. Both Gen. Moek Dara and Chea Leng were sent to Banteay Meanchey Court and have been questioned for 2 and a half hours from 7:30 p.m to 9 p.m.
After the court session, the pair was then detained temporarily at Banteay Meanchey temporarily on drug-related charges.
Many observers have questioned whether the arrests of many police and military officers are a genuine attempt to stamp out corruption or where it was a case of purges within the ruling Cambodian People's Party as all the officers arrested were loyalists of Deputy Prime Minister Sar Kheng who are considered a strong rival to Prime Minister Hun Sen.
