Another anti-narcotic police officer from Banteay Meanchey province has been arrested in connections with the arrests of Gen. Hun Hean and Col. Chheang Son on 9th January who were charged with receiving bribes to release Maj. Mab Lim, another anti-narcotic officer who was arrested on drug charges and allegedly released by orders of Gen. Hun Hean and Col. Chheang Son.
Capt. Bee Nasy, administrative chief of Banteay Meanchey Anti-Narcotic Office, was arrested at one o'clock in the afternoon of Friday, 14th January. He was then brought to Banteay Meanchey Provincial Court. He was subsequently charged with receiving bribes in the same drug cases involving Maj. Mab Lim, chief of Banteay Meanchey Anti-Narcotic Office.
On 7th January, Lt-Gen. Hun Hean, Banteay Meanchey Police Commissioner and his deputy, Col. Chheang Son, were sacked and arrested two days later for receiving bribes to release Maj. Mab Lim.
A chain of event occurred afterward when Gen. Samith Virak, deputy chief of Logistics at the Ministry of Defence, and his wife, a major in the army, were arrested on 10th January. The next day, Lt-Gen. Moek Dara, secretary general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs, was arrested on the morning of 11th January for alleged drug trafficking. And the next day. Lt-Gen. Peuy Pel, a military commander from Siem Reap, was also arrested. And on Saturday morning 15th January, 4 more officers loyal to Gen. Samith Virak were arrested in Takeo province.
Political analysts and observers are split on whether the arrests are an attempt by the government to stamp out corruption or whether it was a result of an internal power struggle within the ruling CPP because all the arrested were loyalists of Mr. Sar Kheng, a deputy prime minister and minister of interior who is considered a strong rival to Prime Minister Hun Sen's grip on power.
