Bangkok Post
Meechai Burapa's rebuking of PM Abhisit Vejjajiva (PostBag, Jan 1) for demanding that Cambodian PM Hun Sen release the seven Thais who intruded on Cambodian soil is, without doubt, justified, if Mr Abhisit made that demand after knowing that the seven were truly intruders. But apparently PM Abhisit uttered those words when he, along with the rest of us, thought they were arrested while in disputed territory.
It has now transpired that the seven were one kilometre inside Cambodian territory.
What is most disturbing is Meechai's unfavourable comparison of the Thai justice system as opposed to the Cambodian justice system.
It is painful to read that he believes a prime minister of Thailand would interfere with a judge in the performance of his duty.
The strict separation of power between the executive branch and judiciary is something that must not be compromised. If Thai judges are under the instructions of PM Abhisit, as Khun Meechai suggested, then we might as well say goodbye to our country.
