Cambodia's inflation rate stands at 4 pct in 2010

PHNOM PENH, Jan. 26, 2011 (Xinhua News Agency) -- Cambodia's consumer price index (CPI) inflation rate declined to 4 percent in 2010 from 5.3 percent a year earlier, according to the statistics from the Ministry of Planning's National Institute of Statistics on Wednesday.

The rate is lower than the forecasts by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank at 4.5 percent and 5 percent respectively, but the same as the forecast by the Asian Development Bank.

The main increase in the inflation rate last year were due to the rise of food and non-alcoholic beverages of 4.28 percent, clothing and foot-wear of 1.87 percent, housing, water and electricity, gas and other fuels of 3.83 percent, transportation of 6.79 percent, restaurant and hotel of 2.2 percent, and miscellaneous goods and services of 10.47 percent, recorded the statistics.

Chan Sophal, president of Cambodian Economic Association, said Wednesday that the rate is good for the economy and is manageable.

"We forecast that the rate will be around 4 percent this year, however, the gradual rise in the prices of petroleum will pose a concern to the inflation rate this year," he said.

Wow, good to see that. Cambodia can have inflation under control. That is key to economic progress and development.
