A senior Cambodian government official has on 14th January bitterly attacked Mr. Brad Adams (pictured), executive director of Human Rights Watch, and called him 'an international bandit' after Mr. Adams had given an interview to Radio Free Asia's Khmer Language program, where he criticised Mr. Hun Sen's leadership.

In the interview, Mr. Adams said Mr. Hun Sen is not a popular leader, but was able to remain in power through intimidation and threats and corruption that enable him to buy off officials who are against him. He said Mr. Hun Sen had used the 'divide and rule strategy' very well to weaken the oppositions. "I think that Mr. Hun Sen wants to consolidate his powers and want to end any criticism of his government. He want to have a single-party system, even though he pretended to hold election every 5 years because he can control all the elections that ensure that he automatically wins. He also wants to control all the country's wealth and he wanted to change Cambodia into an authoritarian capitalist system", he added.

Mr. Tith Sothea, spokesman for the Press and Quick Reaction Unit, bitterly attacked Mr. Adams during a press conference, calling him a useless individual and an ignorant 'international bandit' who wanted to destroy Cambodia's peace. "I consider this individual as an ignorant international bandit who wanted to destroy Cambodia's peace and development which were the real achievements that were born out of the brilliant leadership of Samdech Prime Minister Hun Sen and many other leaders from the Cambodian People's Party", he said.

He angrily denied Mr. Adams' accusations, calling him a blind person who failed to see the achievements of Mr. Hun Sen. "This foreigner should not insult Cambodia's leadership who had won an election in a landslide victory which was organised through a real democratic system", he said.

He said Mr. Adams had twisted the truth because human rights situation in Cambodia is like a 'paradise', saying that some individuals had overstepped their freedom of expression which forced the government to take legal actions against them. He had also accused Mr. Adams of being mesmerised and hypnotised by the oppositions and looked down on the government that was born out of the real will of the people. He has also accused Mr. Adams of violating Mr. Hun Sen's political rights because he had the supports of the people to be prime minister in the upcoming 5th mandate and beyond.
