Cambodia and Vietnam has signed an agreement (pictured) to produce topographic maps between the two countries after the two sides had awarded the contract for the production of the maps to a Danish company, BLOM Geomatics AS, which beat a wide range of foreign companies in a bidding process late last year.
The signing ceremony was held on Thursday 13th January in Phnom Penh and the agreement was signed by Cambodian Border Committee chairman Var Kimhong, Vietnam's Deputy Foreign Minister in charge of border affairs Mr. Ho Sin Son and a representative from Blom Geomatics AS.
Mr. Var Kimhong told reporters that the drawing and productions of the new topographic maps will be completed in 2012 by using satellite and aerial photographs as data. The data, including all the locations of the 375 border posts and geographic data, will then be entered into a data base system. Mr. Ho Sin Son said the purpose of the new photographic maps are to clearly demarcate the borders of the two countries and to build the borders into a zone of peace and developments.
Blom Geomatics AS, which had produced topographic maps for many countries in the ASEAN region, was awarded the contract in mid December of last year for the cost of $1,528,000. And according to Mr. Var Kimhong, the new maps will be drawn with the 1:25,000 scales.
