Two Cambodian men were in custody today on $1.23 million bail each in connection with a beating and home invasion in unincorporated West Puente Valley on Jan. 4, sheriff's officials announced today.
Srun Ly, 38, of Fontana and Chanthoern Chhuon, 31, of Stockton are scheduled to appear in court today on charges that could result in life sentences if they are convicted, Asian gang detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
The home invasion occurred about 1:30 p.m. Jan. 4 in the 1300 block of Edanruth Avenue, Sgt. Steve Kim of the sheriff's Operation Safe Streets Bureau said.
Four suspects with handguns forced their way into the home of an Asian victim who was growing marijuana for "a legitimate marijuana dispensary," Kim said.
The suspects were described as two Asian men named "Sean" and "Ty," one Latino man, and "one other male unknown," Kim said.
They terrorized the victim by beating him with their hands and feet, threatening him with a handgun and pistol-whipping him, Kim said. They also bound the victim's hands and feet during an ordeal that lasted several hours, Kim said.
They left the victim unconscious and bleeding on the floor of his home, Kim said.
The suspects stole a cellular phone, dried marijuana and plants, cash, lighting and filters used for cultivating marijuana, Kim said.
The victim freed himself a day later and reported the crime.
Investigators identified Ly as a suspect almost immediately, Kim said. They got a warrant and arrested Ly early Jan. 6 in Fontana.
A second suspect, Chhuon, was located several days later and arrested Jan. 13 with the assistance of a SWAT team in Stockton, 350 miles north of Los Angeles, Kim said.
Ly iallegedly is a member of the "Wah Ching" Asian street gang based in Los Angeles, and Chhuon allegedly is a member of the "Original Bloods" Asian street gang based in Stockton, Kim said.
Ly and Chhuon are scheduled to appear in Rio Hondo Court today, Kim said.
The District Attorney in El Monte has already filed charges of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats for each suspect, Kim said. They face life in prison if they are convicted.
The other two suspects in the Jan. 4 home invasion remained at-large.
