Prince Ranariddh has returned to politics!

Prince Norodom Ranariddh, privy councillor to the king and former president of the royalist Funcinpec and Norodom Ranariddh Party, has told supporters in Kampong Cham province yesterday 4th December that he will return back to politics, two years after he quit politics in a deal with Prime Minister Hun Sen that saw him appointed as the privy councilor to the king.

During the public meeting with supporters in Kampong Cham, the prince said the main reason for his decision to return to politics is because he was responding to the 25,000 former members of the Norodom Ranariddh Party, now renamed the Nationalist Party, who had petitioned him to return to politics to lead the party. He said his mission was to reunite all the royalists and the nationalists. "I have the task to reunite all the royalists where neither the Funcinpec nor the Nationalist Party have the capacity to reunite them during my absence. I will reunite all these forces. My second task is, when we reunited all of these forces already, we will use all these forces to serve our country", he declared during a meeting with supporters in Kampong Cham.

The prince had also said the other reason was because the current Funcinpec Party, led by Mr. Keo Put Rasmy (his brother-in-law) and Gen. Bunchhay, is incapable of winning the 2013 election and that he needs to return back to politics to help reuniting the two royalist parties. He criticised that the present Funcinpec Party is not the same as the original Funcinpec Party founded by King Father Sihanouk in 1981. He said he will not choose the opposition path, but become a real partner with the government to rebuild the nation. "There are some people who used the worst tragedy of the 22nd November for political gains. For me, if I have enough forces, I will continue to use the middle way to raise the issues and become a real partner to resolve all issues", he said.

Prince Ranariddh was deposed from the presidency of the Funceinpec Party on 18th October 2006, in a party coup engineered by the powerful party Secretary General Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay. He formed the Norodom Ranariddh Party in the same year but was forced to flee the country shortly later after Gen. Nhiek Bunnchhay lodged a lawsuit against him for breach of trust and party fund embezzlement. He was allowed to return to the country after the 2008 election in a political deal with Prime Minister Hun Sen in exchange for him to support Mr. Hun Sen and quit politics and in turn will be appointed as the privy councillor to the king.

Prince Ranariddh's announcement to return to politics came after there are rumours that the two royalist parties planned to merge in 2011 with a new name and had invited the prince to lead the newly-merged party.
