Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay, the powerful Secretary General of the royalist Funcinpec Party, presently Prince Ranariddh's nemesis who was once an ardent supporter of the Prince, is opposed to the prince's return to politics.
He said the prince should not return to politics because he is an advisor to the king and that his political activities would tarnish the image of the royal family and the monarchy. "I do not want to see Prince Ranariddh re-entering politics because he has a position inside the royal palace and is a close advisor to the king. I think that if he re-enters politics and he is also a member of the royal family, it can tarnish the reputation of the king when he goes on election campaigns and that's when he will be verbally attacked with insults", he said.
During a public meeting with 500 supporters in Kampong Cham province on Saturday, Prince Ranariddh has announced a political comeback, saying politics is like an addiction to opium. During the meeting, he has called on all Funcinpec members, except Nhiek Bunchhay and Keo Put Rasmy (his brother-in-law), to defect to his soon-to-be re-named Norodom Ranariddh Party, accusing the Funcinpec Party of being a satellite and puppet of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and saying that the party is incapable of winning the election with Nhiek Buchhay and Keo Put Rasmy at the helm.
Nhiek Bunchhay hit back at the prince, saying he has led the Funcinpec Party into a coalition with the ruling CPP after the first three previous elections. "I cannot accept the prince's accusations that Funcinpec Party is a satellite party of the ruling CPP. In the past, 2 to 3 terms already that Funcinpec had been a partner with the CPP in the coalition government since the prince was the president of the party. Why the prince still criticise us by using the same old words because these words will reflect back to him", he said.
Mr. Hen Samrin, president of the National Assembly, a position once held by Prince Ranariddh when he was still in the coalition with the CPP, told Kampuchea Thmey Daily that he is not concerned about Prince Ranariddh's return to politics, saying that all Cambodian citizens have the rights to enter politics as inscribed in the constitution.
