Cambodia has released Democrat MP for Bangkok Panich Vikitsreth, Veeera Somkwamkid, co-leader of the Thailand Patriot Network and the other five Thais arrested earlier today, Charoen Kanthawong, chairman of the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), said on Wednesday afternoon.

He said their release had been confirmed by secretary-general to the foreign minister Chavanont Intharakomalsut.

Mr Charoen, a Democrat MP, said although Mr Panich is a member of his committee he had not been assigned to travel to disputed border area in Sa Kaeo’s Aranyaprathet district where he was detained.

He did not know whether Mr Panich visited the border area on his own initiative or was sent there by the Democrat Party.

The JBC chief said he did not think Mr Panich’s arrest in the disputed border area would hurt the relationship between Thailand and Cambodia.

Earlier today, Mr Panich, Mr Veera and five colleagues travelled to the border district of Aranyaprathet, intent on investigating whether Cambodians had trespassed on territory claimed by Thailand.

While inspecting the border area in territory claimed by Thailand they were detained by Cambodian soldiers.
