The abbot Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvarak pagoda (pictured), which is a scene of an ongoing tug of war between Cambodia and Thailand, has resigned from his position and left the monkhood altogether and returned back to live with his parents in Sa-Em village, Kantuot commune, Choam Ksan district of Preah Vihear province. It is not clear what prompted him to resign and left the monkhood, but local government officials and local Buddhist laypeople are surprised of his abrupt and mysterious resignation.

Ven. Khan Yun was ordained in 1999 in Tuol Andet pagoda, Teuk Krohorm commune, Choam Ksan district of Preah Vihear province. He was later sent to Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvarak pagoda and was eventually appointed as the pagoda's permanent abbot by the provincial Buddhist patriarch.

After he resigned and left the monkhood, Ven. Khan Yun refused to make any comments surrounding his resignation. The new abbot has yet to be appointed.

Wat Keo Sekha Kirisvarak pagoda was partially occupied by Thai troops on 15th July 2008 when hundreds of Thai troops were sent to occupy the Preah Vihear surrounding areas after Unesco had inscribed the temple as a world heritage site a week earlier. It was a scene of at least two deadly armed clashes with Thai troops in 2008 and 2009.

The news of the resignation of the abbot of Wat Keo Sekha Kirivarak came after Prime Minister Hun Sen had declared that the 10 Thai troops based at the pagoda had been withdrawn from the temple. Mr. Hun Sen's claim was rejected by Thai PM Abhisit Vejjajiva and has not yet been independently verified.
