The world's deadliest crowd disasters in the past 20 years [happened in Cambodia]

PARIS - At least 339 people were killed Monday in a stampede on a bridge during a festival in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh, according to the government.

Below is a list of some of the deadliest incidents involving crowds, most often stampedes that occur during sporting or religious events, over the past 20 years.

- July 2, 1990, Saudi Arabia: A massive stampede in the Mina tunnel, south of Mecca, during the hajj leaves 1,426 pilgrims asphyxiated or trampled to death. The stampede seems to have been caused by a breakdown in the ventilation system amid high temperatures.

- May 24, 1994, Saudi Arabia: A stampede during the hajj ritual of the "stoning of the devil" at Mina leaves 270 dead.

- August 13, 1994, Congo-Brazzaville: At least 150 people, most of them children, are trampled or suffocated to death when a crowd panics at the end of an evangelist's sermon in an church.

- October 16, 1996, Guatemala: A stampede causes the deaths of 90 people in the Mateo Flores football stadium in Guatemala City before a FIFA World Cup qualification match.

- April 9, 1998, Saudi Arabia: More than 118 pilgrims are killed in a stampede at Mina.

- May 9, 2001, Ghana: A stampede that follows a football match in a stadium in the capital Accra leaves 126 people dead.

- February 1, 2004, Saudi Arabia: 251 pilgrims die in stampede at Mina.

- January 25, 2005, India: A crush during a Hindu pilgrimage in the district of Satara, 300 kilometres from Mumbai, kills 257 people.

- August 31, 2005, Iraq: More than 1,000 people taking part in a pilgrimage are trampled to death or drown when a crowd panics on a bridge over the Tigris River in Baghdad caused by a rumour that two suicide bombers are present.

- January 12, 2006, Saudi Arabia: During the pilgrimage at Mina at least 364 people are killed and more than 300 injured in a crush during the "stoning of the devil".

- February 4, 2006, Philippines: A stampede in a queue of close to 30,000 impoverished people trying to get onto a television show leaves 74 dead and more than 400 injured in a stadium in Manila.

- August 3, 2008, India: In a Hindu temple in Himachal Pradesh state, 150 worshippers, a good number of them children, are crushed to death in a stampede caused by a rumour of a landslide.

- September 30, 2008, India: A stampede inside a Hindu temple in the western state of Rajasthan leaves 224 pilgrims dead.

- March 4, 2010, India: Sixty-three people, all women and children, are crushed to death when a gate collapses at a temple in northern Uttar Pradesh state, causing panic in a crowd of 10,000 people.
