Villagers from Memot district in Kampong Cham province have sent a petition to Cambodian Border Commission chairman Var Kimhong (pictured), accusing the Vietnamese authority of encroaching on their lands at Domrey Phong Point in Da Knong village, Da commune, Memot district of Kampong Cham province.

The petition, thumbprinted by 222 villagers, accused the Vietnamese authority of planting border post No. 109 inside their lands on 27th October 2010.

In response to the villagers' petition, Mr. Var Kimhong has accused the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) of inciting the villagers while at the same time denied that there is any encroachments by the Vietnamese authority, saying that the demarcation works have been conducted jointly by the Cambodian and Vietnamese border officials with the involvements of, and in consultation with, the local authority.

The villagers had sent their petition to Mr. Var Kimhong on 29th October. However, 2 weeks on he said he had not received the petition yet. The petition, however, was made available to journalists on Friday 12th November.

Mr. Mao Monivann, SRP MP for Kampong Cham, said he had already received the villagers' petition and said he and other SRP MPs will soon write a letter to the government to explain about this issue to the parliament.

Mr. Rong Chhun, chairman of the Cambodian Watchdog Council, said he will lead a delegation to visit border post No. 109 on 24th November, despite being warned by Mr. Var Kimhong that he will face the full force of the laws if he proceeded with his planned visit.

Var Kim Hong needs to be replaced ASAP. I recommend a 3rd party candidate that does not belongs to any party and stays neutral. This person must focus on the map that was agreed, signed and respect by International community.

Agreed. The person who holds this position must be a non-political and neutral person to be able to serve the interests of the nation better. A political person like Svar Kimhong will only serve the political interests of his masters, Hun Sen and the Vietnamese. I feel so sad for these villagers and the fate of our nation. Foreigners have violated them everyday, yet the government and Svar Kimhong turned a blind eye and instead accused them of incitement.
