Opposition leader Sam Rainsy has told his supporters during the commemoration of the 15th anniversay of the foundation of the Sam Rainsy Party that he will return to Cambodia before the commune election which is due to take place in 2012.
Speaking to about 1,000 supporters through a video link (pictured) from France, Mr. Sam Sainsy said among the 20 or so political parties in Cambodia, there are only two major political parties, the Sam Rainsy Party and the ruling Cambodian People's Party, which are electorally competitive. He said the Sam Rainsy Party is a strong party that dare to defend the nation, people and Cambodian territorial integrity which have put himself in trouble that led to his exile until today.
Mr. Tith Sothea, spokesman for the Press and Quick Reaction Unit, said Mr. Sam Rainsy is lying to the people because he is running away from the law. He said there will be no political compromise with Mr. Rainsy until he served his jail term first.
On Monday 1st November, MPs from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party and Human Rights Party had met with the U.S Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and they had rainsed a number of issues with her. Among one of the issues is the case of Mr. Rainsy's exile which, according to MPs present at the meeting, Mrs. Clinton had promised to look into his case to enable him to return to Cambodia safely.
