The oppositions and civil society have called for heads to be rolled in the wake of Cambodia's worst stampede disaster which have killed 347 and wounded 395 people. They have particularly called for the resignations of Phnom Penh Governor Kep Chuktema and Phnom Penh Police Commissioner Touch Naroth for failing to prevent the disaster.
Mr. Kem Sokha, president of the minor opposition Human Rights Party, said the government must sack the two leaders. "The government must punish those responsible senior officials for their (in)actions and (mis)management. If not, they must be sacked", he said.
Mr. Yim Sovan (pictured), spokesman for the major opposition Sam Rainsy Party, has also called for the sackings of those officials directly responsible for the tragedy. "I am calling on the government to suspend from their duties those officials responsible for the tragedy to pave the way for the investigations. I am also calling for the resignations of the Phnom Penh Governor and the Phnom Penh Police Commissioner", he said.
Touch Naroth, Phnom Penh Police Commssioner, dismissed the opposition allegations, saying he won't resign because his authority had done enough to protect and save the victims of the satmpede.
