An adulterer has faced court on Friday 12th November after being caught in the act by his jealous wife while he was enjoying a honeymoon with his mistress at a guesthouse in Phnom Penh 0n 9th September.
R. N. R (name abbreviated to protect her identity), from Phnom Penh's Tuol Svay Prey II district, told Koh Santepheap that she was married to 42 year-old Ly Bunthoeun on 20th January 2010. She said he just sleeps at home with her for 2 days only after the wedding and after that he will disappear for half a week without a trace and only turn up unannounced occasionally. Three months into the marriage, she became pregnant and told her husband of the good news, hoping it would give him comfort and reasons to stay home more. Instead, the news of her pregnancy has sent him into a rage by making threats to her if she did not agree to terminate the pregnancy. Because she is scared of him and because she love him dearly, she agreed to terminate the pregnancy by taking the abortion pills.
However, his strange behaviours have caught her suspicions and she began to follow his every move until 10th of July when she caught him taking another woman into Champa Guesthouse on the outskirt of Phnom Penh. She forced her way into the hotel room and took photos of them in the act to use as evidence in an adultery case and for divorce procedures. After she broke into the hotel room and tooks photos, the scuffle broke out briefly when the husband and his mistress attempted to wrestle the camera and photos from her. Their attempt failed after the police arrived shortly later.
In an adultery court hearing on Friday, the court sentenced Ly Buntoeun to 6 months suspended jail term, ordered him to pay 60 million riels ($15,000) in compensation to his wife and fined him 500,000 riels ($125) for adultery under the Monogamy Act enacted by parliament in 2006. The couple have 30 days in which to lodge their appeals.
