The latest news from Preah Vihear has indicated that Thai troops stationed along the Cambodian-Thai border near Preah Vihear temple have yesterday morning started to withdraw from their frontline positions.
Gen. Chea Dara, Cambodian Commander-in-Chief in charge of the Preah Vihear Operations, has confirmed that a large number of Thai troops had been withdrawn from the Preah Vihear frontline, but added he can't confirm the exact number. However, a Defence Ministry official who spoke on condition of anonymity, said 30 truckloads of Thai troops had been withdrawn. The official hopes that the rest of the Thai troops will be withdrawn in a timely manner until the Preah Vihear border and area around the temple have returned to normalcy to the pre-15th July 2008 situation, the time before Thai troops invaded the area.
Gen. Chea Dara said that the border situations have eased after the meeting between Prime Minister Hun Sen and Thai PM Abhisit Vejjajiva in Brussels on Monday. However, euphoria about Thai troop withdrawals in the past have turned into disappointment as the withdrawals did not eventuate as speculated.
