Prime Minister Hun Sen (pictured) has lashed out at opposition leader Sam Rainsy for turning a legal matter into a personal dispute by lodging criminal lawsuits against him in international courts.

Speaking publicly during a graduation ceremony at IIC University, the premier has strongly warned Mr. Rainsy that his action has served foreign interests.

Mr. Hun Sen's accusations came after Mr. Rainsy and his party wrote a letter to him, accusing the government of interfering in the internal affairs of a neighbouring country in violation of the 1991 Paris Peace Accords. The letter had raised about border violations by Cambodia's eastern neighbour (Vietnam). Mr. Hun Sen retorted that why the opposition party did not raise the issue of border violations by Cambodia's western neighbours (Thailand). "Now I put forward the question that we have interfered in other countries' affairs, violated the Paris Peace Accords. All compatriots please think carefully. They have invaded us and why (the opposition) accused us of violating the Paris Peace Accords? But I think that they (opposition) are launching repeated attacks to turn their dispute with the laws into a dispute with Hun Sen. Sorry, I know this very well", he said.

Mr. Yim Sovan, spokesman for the Sam Rainsy Party, said what the party has been doing was for the interests of the country. "The problems that had occurred in Svay Rieng province was a national problem, the issue of national survival where Vietnam and Cambodia had planted border posts inside Cambodian territory and where a lot of Cambodian farmers who have lost their farmlands have wept and cried out everyday to ask for the return of their lands so they can farm to feed their families. Not only those families, there are many more families whose lands have been affected (due to the planting of border posts)", he said.

Recently, opposition leader Sam Rainsy who lives in self-imposed exile in Paris, had announced that he will lodge criminal lawsuits in international and several European courts against Mr. Hun Sen for masterminding the 1997 grenade attack and implementing the K-5 Plan which has sent tens of thousands of Cambodians to their deaths to build the K-5 Dam to defend Cambodia against the Khmer Rouge attacks in the 1980s. He also accused Prime Minister Hun Sen of violating the Paris Peace Accords by not implementing the democratic principles and by trying to stifle the freedom of speech and democracy guaranteed by the Paris Peace Accords.

Mr. Yim Sovan said, the ruling party had even tried to forget the Paris Peace Accords. "They (government) did not mark the anniversaries of the Paris Peace Accords which was previously designated as a national day, a holiday. But now, the Cambodian People's Party abolished it as a national day and this means that they do not want to commemorate the Paris Peace Accords. Please look, how the present judicial system make the poor people suffer? The rich and the powerful always win (the court cases)?", he said.

To mark the 19th anniversary of the Paris Peace Accords, the opposition Sam Rainsy Party and Khmers living overseas plan to rally around the world in front of UN Headquarter in New York and in Paris on 23rd October.

Mr. Hun Sen has forgotten that his opposition has requested and supported the international helps in term of border issues. We do not know what his(HS) political movement now.

Hun Sen is such a tricky person that he tried to twist things around. What SRP is doing is never for the interests of foreigners but they want Hun Sen to complain about border issues on Vietnam side and Thai side to UN. So SRP is defending Cambodian territory where as Hun Sen is defending Vietnam's interests by putting Rainsy in jail because he tried to protect Khmer land.
