The Phnom Penh Municipal Court has indicated that it will deal with opposition MP's Chea Poch's case after the Cambodian Pchum Ben (Ancestors) Festival in the next few days, relating to the 2004 defamation case brought by Prince Norodom Ranariddh.

Mr. Ek Chheng Hourt, Deputy Prosecutor of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, told Kampuchea Thmey on Friday 1st of October that the court has not set the date to hear the defamation case against MP Chea Poch (pictured), saying that after the Pchum Ben Festival the court will consider writing a letter to the National Assembly to request for the suspension of Mr. Chea Poch's parliamentary immunity before the court can proceed with the case against him.

In 2004, Mr. Chea Poch accused Prince Ranariddh of accepting bribes from Prime Minister Hun Sen in the form of plane and helicopter worth $30 million dollars. The Prince sued him, but had since withdrawn the lawsuit after a political compromise in 2005 which enabled Chea Poch's parliamentary immunity to be re-instated and he was allowed to return home from exile. However, the case was re-opened after he criticised Mr. Nguon Nhel, Deputy President of the National Assembly, of corruptly appointing excessive numbers of advisors. The opposition party said that since Prince Ranariddh, who is the plaintiff, had withdrawn the case against Chea Poch, the case against him has finished.
