LONG BEACH - The United Cambodian Community celebrates 33 years of offering social services and fellowship to the city's Khmer population and Central Area residents tonight.
UCC will hold its anniversary celebration at Hak Heang Restaurant in the heart of Cambodiatown and hand out awards to community leaders, youth and city and business officials.
Among those being honored will be Long Beach Police Chief Jim McDonnell; 4th District Councilman Patrick O'Donnell; Jeanetta McAlpin for her volunteerism at St. Mary Medical Center's Families in Good Health; and youth leaders Rin Chhoun, Sophall Serth, Robert Rath, Jarath Vuthara Sok, Kosall Serth, Dara Nap and Jerry Chinkathuk.
The Food Bank of Southern California and Performance Plus Tire and Automotive are also being honored.
UCC continues to emerge in the community with new programs for everyone from children to seniors.
This year, UCC's third annual health fair drew more than 1,000 participants, and it became the first Cambodian organization to operate an intensive six-week chronic disease self-management class.
The organization also stages English as a Second Language courses, and the UCC Youth Center remains open after school on weekdays offering tutoring, arts and crafts and other activities.
Proceeds from the dinner and a silent auction will benefit the organization.
