The Phnom Penh Court has summoned opposition leader Sam Rainsy (pictured) to appear before the court tomorrow on charges of document forgery and disinformation under articles 49 and 62 of the UNTAC Criminal Code after he had released a series of maps and documents purported to show border encroachments by Vietnam.
Mr. Choung Chou-Ngy, Sam Rainsy's lawyer, told reporters today that he plans to submit two documents before the court and had also repeated his earlier comments that his client is innocent of the charges. He said he had two documents from Prof. Regis Carlos, a French cartographer, who had asserted that the documents and maps used by Mr. Sam Rainsy were real and accurate.
Mr. Yim Sovan, spokesman for the Sam Rainsy Party, said Mr. Sam Rainsy's case is political case that must be resolved through political means.
Mr. Sam Rainsy's tomorrow court hearing is expected to be attended by local and international NGO officials, foreign diplomatic representatives as well as many opposition party's officials.
