Khmer Krom people living in Cambodia are re-establishing the Khmer Krom oldest association in Cambodia. Mit Samakum Khmer Krom (Friends of Khmer Krom Association or Khmer Krom Friendship Association) was established by a Khmer Krom aristocrat, Oknha Lam Em, in 1937 to preserve the Khmer culture and identity.

On Sunday, a number of Khmer Krom have gathered in Wat Samakki Rainsey Pagoda in Phnom Penh to open a congress to discuss about the re-establishment of the association. Mr. Thach Sang, the newly-elected president of the Friends of Khmer Krom Association, said the purpose of the re-establishment of this association is for the preservation of Khmer Krom identity. "Our aim is to develop our culture, literature and traditions to show the identity of the Khmer Krom that they are true Khmer blood", he said.

Mit Samakum Khmer Krom was formed by Oknha Lam Em in Kleang (Soc Trang) province in 1937. After it was persecuted by the Vietnamese authority, the association had relocated its office to Cambodia. In 1979, the association had disappeared, but it was re-established again in 1993 without any active agenda.
