A senior Cambodian official said Cambodia has decided to suspend its complaint to the UN after Prime Minister Hun Sen and Thai {M Abhisit Vejjajiva reached an agreement to continue bilateral talks. Mr. Hun Sen had threatened to complain to the UN and angrily vowing to seek regional and international mediation to the Cambodian-Thai border conflict after Thai PM Abhisit Vejjajiva allegedly threatened to use force to evict Cambodian troops and civilians from the area near Preah Vihear temple early last month.

Mr. Prak Sokhon, Minister attached to the Prime Minister's office, said upon arriving from New York on Sunday 26th that the decision to suspend the complaint to the UN was made after Prime Minister Hun Sen and Thai PM Abhisit had reached an agreement in New York to establish an emergency telephone hotline between the two prime ministers and agreed to continue with the bilateral negotiations. "(The agreement) was to avoid confrontations and armed clashes by troops along the border areas and to ensure that troops have shown the utmost restraint in order to maintain the good relations that most army units have made in the past. To avoid the dispute at Preah Vihear from spreading to other parts of border areas or can affect the relations and co-operations between the two countries", he said.

In early August, Prime Minister Hun Sen had angrily sent a letter to the UN informing it of the Thai threats after Thai PM Abhisit allegedly threatened to use force to dislodge Cambodian troops from area near Preah Vihear he considers a Cambodian territory.

Mr. Prak Sokhon also said that Prime Minister Hun Sen and Mr. Abhisit had planned to meet again during the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Brussels and the Asean Summit in Hanoi in October.

Mr. Yim Sovan, spokesman for the opposition Sam Rainsy Party, said the government should speed up the resolution to the Cambodian-Thai border conflict by involving the international community. "The government should not allow the issue to be dragged on and should not be afraid of the involvements of the international community. Please involve the international community in order to end that issue quickly", he said.

Mr. Prak Sokhonn said despite suspending its complaint to the UN, Cambodia is closely monitoring Thailand's implementation of the agreements with Cambodia to see if the Thai parliament will ratify the three agreements reached with Cambodia in the last two years regarding border conflict resolution.

I can't trust this guy Hun Sen to defend Cambodian territory. He kept changing his mind back and forth. One day he said he will ask international cpmmunity to help, the next day he want to bilateral negotiations with Thailand. He is crazy. I agree, look like Hun Sen is a puppet of Abhisit.
