Representatives from the Chinese Bridge and Road Corporation and Minister of Public Works Mr. Tram Iv Tek has on Saturday 11th September signed an agreement to build a second Chroy Changvar Bridge in Phnom Penh.

The bridge construction will cost $27.5 million and the funding for the construction will come from a credit provided by China Exim Bank.

The second Chroy Changvar Bridge, 719 metres long and 13.5 metres wide, will be built across the Tonle Sap River in parallel with the old Chroy Changvar (Cambodian-Japanese Friendship) Bridge. It is not clear when this second bridge will be built, but it will take 38 months to complete.

Both sides had also signed an agreement to upgrade the 95-kilometre National Highway No. 41 from intersection of National Highway No. 4 to Chumkiri district in Kampot province. The upgrade of the highway, which will be paved with DBST rubber material, will cost $46.25 million and will take 40 months to complete.

The news of the construction of the second Chroy Chanvar Bridge comes after Prime Minister Hun Sen announced that Japan had decided to fund the construction of the $131 million Neak Loeung Bridge, which will be completed in 2015.
