The spokesmen for Prince Norodom Ranariddh (pictured), the privy councillor and former president of the royalist Funcinpec Party and Norodom Ranariddh Party (NRP), was forced to deny rumours that Prince Ranariddh is re-entering politics after he released a statement expressing his fears that a merger between the two royalist parties would kill the Nationalist Party, the new name of the NRP, reports Deum Ampil.

On 23rd August, Prince Ranariddh released a statement expressing his concerns that the merger between the two parties would make the Nationalist Party lose its supports and honour of the party name. His statement comes after a Constitutional Council announcement August 4 claiming that any party that merges with another will be removed from the Ministry of Interior's list of political organizations.

However, his spokesmen, Chea Chanboribor and Noranariddh Anandayat, were quick to deny through a statement that the prince has any intention of re-entering politics. "Samdech Krom Preah (Ranariddh) has no intention whatsoever to lead a political party, including the Nationalist Party", said Mr. Chea Chanboribor said in a statement.

The statement also said that the prince is not opposed to the merger of the two parties. "Samdech Krom Preah has no intention of opposing the merger of the Funcinpec and Nationalist parties", added the statement.

In hist statement on 23rd August, Prince Ranariddh said he is not opposed to the merger but he if the merger means that MPs, municipal and commune councillors from the Nationalist Party lose their positions, he can't accept that merger.

Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay, the powerful Secretary General of the Funcinpec Party who orchestrated a party coup to ouster the prince from the presidency of the Funcinpec Party in 2006, said the prince's comments is his personal opinion and won't affect the planned merger. "This is his expression according to aspects of the laws, it won't affect anything and the two parties will not change any structures for this alliance", he said.
