Gold finds at Phnom Chiso (Mount Chiso) has caused a gold rush to the area, with illegal miners using heavy machinery to destroy the mountain in a rush to dig for gold, reports Kampuchea Thmey.

The reports said that the gold was found at Phnom Chiso located at Roluos Toch and Roluos Thom villages in Socheth commune of Sandan district in Kampong Thom province. Villagers said that illegal miners brought in 70 heavy machinery to dig for gold and that local authority did not attempt to stop them. On the contrary, they said that local authority had charged illegal miners 300,000 riels ($80) for each machinery they have brought in.

The reports said that because there is no attempt to stop the mining activities and due news of a large gold finds had spread, people from other areas had flocked in great numbers to try their luck, causing irreparable environmental damage to the mountain.
