Cambodia and Thailand are involved in an escalating war of words over their border dispute.

Cambodia has written to the United Nations saying it's ready to defend its territory.

Prime Minister Hun Sen accused neighbouring Thailand of threatening to use its armed forces to settle the dispute.

Hun Sen said Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva made a clear threat to use military force when he addressed royalist Yellow Shirts in Bangkok on Saturday.

He says the speech is in violation of UN rules.

Hun Sen reaffirmed his country's constant policy not to use military means to settle disputes with its neighbours.

Cambodia and Thailand been in dispute since 2008, when the ancient Preah Vihear temple was granted UNESCO World Heritage status.

Thai nationalist Yellow Shirts are demanding their government eject Cambodian citizens from the disputed 4.6 square kilometre area, and regain control of the temple.
