The Cambodian Defence Ministry on Wednesday said that Cambodia has refused to withdraw troops from the area surrounding Preah Vihear temple as demanded by the Thai prime minister a day earlier, reports RFA.

Gen. Chhum Socheat, spokesman for the Cambodian Defence Ministry, said Cambodia will not withdraw troops from the area and warned that Cambodian troops will fight back if Thai troops invaded the area.

Thai PM Abhisit Vejjajiva was quoted by AFP on Tuesday as saying that Thailand will resolve the issue peacefully, but if Cambodian troops and civilians do not want to confront Thai troops they must evacuate from the 4.6 square kilometres area claimed by Thailand.

Both Gen. Chhum Socheat and Foreign Ministry spokesman Koy Kuong said Cambodian troops and civilians are living and stationing in Cambodian territory, even before the MOU was signed in 2000, therefore they will not move out as demanded by the Thai PM. They said Cambodian troops will continue to be stationed in the area near Preah Vihear temple to defend Cambodian territorial integrity.
