Troops surrounded Funcinpec's radio station

There are reports that about 10-15 troops have surrounded Ta Prohm Radio Station located at Phnom Penh's Dangkor district in an attempt to sack the current radio management team, reports DAP News.

A staff close to the current management who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Deum Ampil on Friday that about 10-15 soldiers had entered the radio station's compound and camped there for the last two days.

The same source said that Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay (pictured), the powerful Secretary General of Funcinpec Party, wanted to replace the current management team led by Mr. Nhem Sophana, Mr. Roun Meatra and Mrs. So Lyda with his own loyalists, namely Mr. Khieu Sourn. The source said that Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay is unhappy with Mr. Nhem Sophana, the current director, for broadcasting Radio Free Asia's programs without consulting with the party top leadership.

At the time of this article going to press, Mr. Nhem Sophana cannot be reached for comment. Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay, on the other hand, said that the deployment of the troops around the radio station was not intended to intimidate the current radio management, but to maintain laws and orders because in the past, many of the staff at the station are not loyal to him.

He said there were only 6 unarmed soldiers deployed at the radio station, not 15 as reported. He admitted that he planned to reshuffle the management at the radio station because he said the current management team lacks transparency and did not perform well in the running of the radio station. He said the new director will be Mr. Khieu Sourn, but added that Nhem Sophana will be retained but demoted to the position of deputy director of the station.

According to sources close to Funcinpec, the current Funcinpec leadership is split into two camps - one camp is loyal to Gen. Nhiek Bunchhay who want to the party to tow Prime Minister Hun Sen's line, and another group loyal to party president Keo Put Rasmy who want to rebuild Funcinpec as an independent and strong party. These group comprised of the majority of the party's political doyens such as Lu Laysreng, Kol Pheng, Prince Sisowath Sirirath and many more.

In 2006, Nhiek Bunchhay had used the same tactics to wrestle the control of the FM90-MHz Ta Prohm Radio Station from Prince Ranariddh's loyalists, after the Prince was deposed as Funcinpec leader in a party coup led by Nhiek Bunchhay himself.

"Maintain laws and orders because in the past, many of the staff at the station are not loyal to him".

Really, you have to resort to use military when anyone have different views than yours. Well, its no surprise to me for this action to be taken. First of all Nhiek Bunchhay is not educated and he only get to where he is today because he knows how to kiss HS's ass.

Nhiek Bunchhay is a useless piece of shit!

Don't vote for FUNCINPEC. With no votes obtained, Hun Sen won't want his stinky ass to be kissed by Nhiek Bunchhay either even though the latter really wants to do it!

I used to think that Nhiek Bunchhay is a good and strong leader. But now I know he is very corrupt and power hungry. He doesn't think about Funcinpec or the country, but only about his power. He is one of Hun Sen's big ass-kisser. Soon, someone will send him and Hun Sen to hell together.
