Five MPs from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) have on 30th June sent two separate petitions to Prime Minister Hun Sen and National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin asking them to intervene to allow farmers living near the Khmer-Vietnamese border post No. 270 work in their lands, reports Cambodian Express News.
There are recent reports that Vietnamese authority prohibited Khmer farmers from toiling their lands after border post No. 270 was allegedly planted in the middle of their rice-fields in Borei Cholasa district of Takeo province. The oppositions and civil society claimed that border post No. 270 was planted about 300-400 metres deep inside Khmer territory. The government, however, disputed their claims.
Mr. Var Kimhong, Chairman of Cambodian Border Commission, refused to make any comments regarding the SRP's petitions, saying he has yet to receive the petitions.
However, Mr. Tith Sothea, spokesman for the Quick and Press Reaction Unit, said the petitions are not necessary because Mr. Hun Sen is well informed about this issue, saying that the areas in questions are just grasslands. He also accused the SRP of trying to capitalise on the border issues for political gains.
