Appalling and unhygienic conditions of Kampong Cham Prison are responsible for the deaths of 6 inmates in the first half of July, who have died of diseases and illnesses, reports Cambodian Express News.

Mr. Chan Soveth, investigator for human rights group Adhoc, said yesterday that in the first six months of 2010, there were 26 prison inmates dying in the whole prison system around the country, but 6 have died in Kampong Cham Prison in just less than a month. He said those prison inmates died of the lack of medical cares and prison's negligence.

He said many suspects had been detained awaiting trials exceeding the legal time limit due to the shortage of judges and judicial facilities to expedite the trials, causing the overcrowding the prison system. He said many prisons had doubled its capacity like Kampong Cham Prison which was built for 400 prisoners but is currently holding 800 prisoners.

Earlier this week, Human Rights Watch as well as local human rights groups have strongly criticised the overcrowding and appalling conditions of Cambodia's prison systems and urged urgent actions be taken to address the problems.
