The Phnom Penh Municipal Court has on 1st July issued an ultimatum to Mu Sochua to pay the 16.5 million riles ($4,000) fine or face jail term, reports Radio Free Asia.
Mr. Chea Sok Heang, the Phnom Penh Court Judge, has on 28th June ordered Mu Sochua to pay the fine at the court to pay compensation to Prime Minister Hun Sen. He said if she refuses to pay, the court will take action against her. However, Judge Chea Sok Heang did not elaborate on what specific action the court will take against Mu Sochua.
Mu Sochua, who is scheduled to return to Cambodia from abroad on 5th of July, steadfastly said she will not pay the fine and is willing to go to jail as a matter of principle because the court's verdict is unjust.
Mr. Phay Siphan, spokesman for the Council of Minister, said Mu Sochua must abide by the court's verdict which independent of political interferences.
Mr. Kul Panha, executive director of COMFREL- the Committee for Free and Fair Election, said Mu Sochua should not be jailed if she did not pay the fine because her case is a civil case and not a criminal case. He appeals for a political solution of the case.
