Mu Sochua: I will not pay the fine and won't flee the country

Mu Sochua (pictured), MP from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), who was ordered to pay 16.5 million riels ($4,000) in fine and compensation for defaming Prime Minister Hun Sen has stood firm, saying she will neither pay the fine nor flee the country, reports Radio Free Asia.

Mu Sochua sued Mr. Hun Sen when he publicly called her a "cheung klang" - strong leg, a term that sometimes means "a hustler", but her suit was dismissed and she was found guilty of defamation when Mr. Hun Sen counter-sued. She said earlier that she'd rather go to jail than pay the fine.

Speaking to RFA on Thursday 1st of July from abroad, she said she will not pay the fine and she will return to Cambodia on 5th of July as scheduled. She added that the reason she refused to pay the fine because she was the one who was defamed and that the court's verdict was unjust. "I cannot pay this fine because since the first step (lower court decision) until the Supreme Court verdict, the decision was not made based on the spirit of the inscribed laws, that is a right to be represented by a lawyer, an independent judge and court, a court that is neutral. Thirdly, these requirements are non-existent. So, that's why I cannot accept the verdicts of the (Phnom Penh) Municipal Court, the Appeal Court and the Supreme Court", she said.

Mr. Sok Roeun, Deputy Investigating Judge of Phnom Penh Municipal Court, said, by laws, if Mu Sochua refused to pay the fine, she will be jailed. "Wait until the Treasury completed its works first and when it reported to the prosecutor of Phnom Penh Court, then the prosecutor will take action in accordance with the laws", he said.

On 17th June, the Treasury sent Mu Sochua a demand letter, giving her 15 days in which to pay the fine.

Let the court be alone if Mr. Hun is a strong man. Stop interfere with judicial system. Khmers have had enough suffering from Pol Pot's regime. Let the Cambodia grows at its best.

Hun Sen knows he has done many bad things, therefore he has to control everything- police, military, courts and bureaucracy- so he can continue abuse people and stay in power for as long as he likes. However, everything has its use-by date and Mr. Hun Sen will one day reaches his end and falls from power in dramatic style.
