Lawyer for Prime Minister Hun Sen said Mu Sochua, MP from an opposition Sam Rainsy Party, will be jailed or have her properties confiscated if she refused to pay fines and compensation to Prime Minister Hun Sen after the Supreme Court ruled that she had defamed the PM, reports Cambodian Express News.
Mr. Ky Tek, lawyer for Mr. Hun Sen, said he had sent a letter to the court prosecutor, Mr. Sok Roeun, asking him to implement the court verdict by ordering Mu Sochua to pay the 8 million riels ($2000) compensation to Mr. Hun Sen and 8.5 million riels ($2,200) in fines to the court. Mrs. Mu Sochua sued Mr. Hun Sen last year when he called her a "cheung klang", a demeaning term for women that sometimes means "a hustler". But her lawsuit was dismissed by the court and the court instead found her guilty of defamation when Mr. Hun Sen counter-sued.
Mr. Chiv Keng, chief Judge of Phnom Penh Court, said he had sent a letter to the Cambodian Treasury to collect the money from Mu Sochua. He said, if she refused to pay as demanded by the court and the Treasury, she could be jailed or her properties be confiscated.
Court officials said that the Cambodian Treasury has forwarded the court's letter to Mu Sochua on 17th June and gives her 10 day in which to pay the compensation and the fines.
Mu Sochua, who steadfastly said she'd rather go to jail than pay the fines, has left for the United States at 8pm on 17th June, the same day the Treasury forwarded the letter to her and cannot be reached for comment. She is travelling to meet U.S officials and to take a petition bearing 2000 signatures to U.S President Obama regarding her case. She is not expected to return back to Cambodia until 1st of July.
