A Cambodian union leader has called for the Cambodian population to attend in great numbers the commemoration service of the 2nd anniversary of the Thai invasion of Preah Vihear temple, which took place on 15th July 2008, 8 days after the temple was inscribed in Unesco's World Heritage List as a world listed-heritage site, reports Radio Free Asia.

In statement dated on 9th, but released on 11th July, Mr. Rong Chhun, president of the Cambodian Teachers Independent Association and chairman of Cambodian Watchdog Council, has called on workers, civil servants, teachers and the Cambodian general population to attend the service in great numbers to condemn the Thai invasion.

The statement, which was co-signed by Mr. Rong Chhun and Mr. Chea Mony, president of Free Trade Union of Workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has also called on the Thai government to respect the Franco-Siamese treaties of 1904 and 1907 signed by France, Cambodia's colonial power and the Siamese (Thai) king, which had been used by the International Court of Justice in its judgement to award Cambodia ownership of the temple in 1962. "We urge the Thai authority to respect the Franco-Siamese treaties of 1904 and 1907 and the conventions on the protection of cultural heritage in case of armed dispute", he said.

He said the commemoration service will be held on 15th July to send a message to the Thai government that the Cambodian population are not happy with the actions (invasion) of Thailand.

A Phnom Penh City Hall official who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the municipal authority will today, 12th July, invite Mr. Rong Chhun to discuss about his application for the gathering, but he won't say whether the permission will be given or not.

Mr. Phay Siphan, spokesman for the Council of Ministers, said the government is not against the planned mass gathering for the defence of Cambodian national interests, but said that organisers must get permission from the authority first. "The strategy of our Samdech Decho Hun Sen is to keep the invaded zone as a peaceful place, awaiting for a solution through legal means in order to avoid any violence which can lead to a full blown war between Cambodia and Thailand", he said.
