Deputy Prime Minister Sok An has asked the Italian ambassador to help train Cambodian archaeologists and help repair and conserve Preah Vihear temple (pictured), saying that it is now a world heritage site, reports everyday.com.
The request was made during a meeting between Mr. Sok An and the Italian ambassador on 1st of July at the Council of Ministers headquarter.
Mr. Ek Tha, spokesman for the Quick and Press Reaction Unit, said the Italian ambassador told Deputy Prime Minister Sok An that the Italian government is currently funding the repair and restoration works of the staircases on the north side of Angkor Wat temple and is also helping to repair and restore about 4,000 stone staues in Siem Reap province.
The Ambassador also said that a number of Italian universities will help with the repair and restoration works on many ancient temples in Cambodia as well as helping to train Cambodian archaeologists and students on how to conserve and repair ancient stone temples.
