The Cambodian Appeal Court is this morning beginning to hear the appeal lodged by opposition Sam Rainsy leader and two the farmers sentenced to jail term for uprooting border posts in late 2009, claiming they were planted in the middle of farmers' rice fields, reports Deum Ampil.
Mr. Sam Rainsy (pictured) was sentenced in absentia to 2 years jail and the two farmers, who were currently in jail, were sentenced to one year jail each by the Svay Rieng Provincial Court. But they lodged the appeal against the sentence.
The court session will start this Tuesday morning, 6th of July. The result of the hearing should be known by the afternoon.
At 12:15pm Cambodia time, Cambodian Express News reported that Appeal Court Judge Khun Leang Meng had decided to postpone the hearing after a defence lawyer walked out of court in protest against the court for not bringing their clinets, who were in jail, to appear before the court. Mr. Choung Chou-Ngy, lawyer for Mr. Sam Rainsy and the two jailed farmers, said the law requires that defendants must be brought to court to hear and answer their case.
