Mr. Sam Rainsy (pictured), the exiled leader of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), will travel to the Philippines later this month to attend the conference of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) of which his eponymous Sam Rainsy Party is a member, reports Cambodian Express News.
Mr. Yim Sovan, spokesman for the SRP, said Mr. Rainsy will travel to the Philippines later this month to attend the CALD conference and also to the attend the inauguration of the newly-elected Philippine President Nonoy Aguino. Mr. Sovan added that, currently, Mr. Rainsy is touring the United States with Mr. Sean Pengse, chairman of the Paris-based Cambodian Border Committee, to meet with U.S officials and representatives of NGOs to discuss about world's economic impact on Cambodia as well as discussing border issues with the Cambodian Diaspora in the States.
Mr. Sovan said Mr. Son Chhay and Mr. Rainsy's wife, Mrs. Tioulong Samaura, as well as a number of other MPs and party officials will also travel to attend the conference. It is expected that Mr. Rainsy will use the opportunity to meet with his party officials to discuss about the strategy and future directions of the party in the event of his permanent absence.
CALD is a grouping of Asian liberals which comprised of many ruling and opposition parties from 8 countries that adopt and adhere to the principle of democracy in their party's political platform.
