Mr. Son Soubert (pictured), a former member of the Constitutional Council, has expressed concerns about the government providing large chunk of border land concessions to the Vietnamese companies saying that those land concessions, mostly areas adjoining Vietnamese borders, could become Vietnamese territories like what had happened the territory of Kampuchea Krom, reports Cambodian Express News.

speaking on the 61st anniversary of the loss of Kampuchea Krom territory, Mr. Son Soubert, a member of the Constitutional Council for 12 years and a son of the late veteran politician Son Sann, who is an ethnic Khmer Krom himself, said that giving land concessions of up to 100,000 hectares along the borders to Vietnamese companies for the duration of 99 years lease, with the agreement that they can employ all Vietnamese workers, could make these land concessions become another Kampuchea Krom. He said, in the past the Vietnamese emperor asked the Cambodian king to allow his subjects to take refuge temporarily in the area known as Kampuchea Krom or Lower Cambodia to escape from internal strife, but later he annexed the territories permanently.

Mr. Son Soubert's comments drew swift response from the government, with Mr. Tith Sothea, spokesman for the Quick and Press Reaction Unit, calling his comment a repeat and a parrotting of the opposition party's position.

Mr. Sothea said land concessions provided to Vietnamese companies had been done in accordance with the laws and that the government is in the process of finalising border demarcations with Vietnam. He added that land concessions to Vietnamese companies or investments from the Vietnamese companies are aimed at stimulating economic growth and generating businesses and trades for the countries.
