A group of Khmer Krom associations in Cambodia said that they are concerned that they might not be able to get a place to commemorate the 61st anniversary of the loss of Kampuchea Krom territory after Phnom Penh authority rejected their request to hold the ceremony at a park in front of Botum Pagoda and a request to hold the ceremony in Chaktomukh Theatre has also been rejected, reports Cambodian express News.

After the rejections, the group applied to use the Olympic Stadium as the venue for the ceremony, but Mr. Thach Setha (pictured), chairman of the Khmer Kampuchea Krom Association, said Mr. Kep Chuktema, the Phnom Penh Governor, replied that only the Ministry of Youth and Sports has the authority whether to authorise the use of the Olympic Stadium. He, however, suggested, should the Ministry of Youth and Sports rejected the application, the Khmer Krom associations should hold the commemoration services in their respective headquarters.

Kampuchea Krom is a former Cambodian territory in southern part of Vietnam comprised of 21 provinces officially ceded to Vietnam by the French parliament on 4th June 1949. According to Vietnamese official figures, there are about one million ethnic Khmer Krom people living in Vietnam. However, according to Khmer sources have put the number of Khmer Krom living in southern Vietnam as high as 12 million.
