Cambodia has called on Thailand to abide by the international court ruling on Preah Vihear case on the eve of the 48th anniversary of the verdict of the International of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague which on 15th July 1962 adjudicated to give ownership of Preah Vihear temple to Cambodia, reports Cambodian Express News.

Thai forces occupied Preah Vihear temple in 1954 and in 1958 Cambodia took Thailand to the ICJ. On 15th July 1962, with a vote of 9 to 3, the court ruled that Preah Vihear belongs to Cambodia and ordered Thailand to withdraw all troops from the temple and return all artefacts to Cambodia.

However, on the 46th anniversary of the ICJ verdict on 15th July 2008, Thailand again sent troops to re-occupy the areas surrounding the temple after Unesco rejected Thailand's proposal for a joint inscription between Cambodia and Thailand when it inscribed the temple as a world heritage site on 7th July of the same year.

Yesterday, on the eve of the 48th anniversary of the ICJ verdict, Mr. Tith Sothea, spokesman for the Quick Press Reaction Unit, called on Thailand to respect the verdict of the world court and withdraw its troops from the occupied territory unconditionally.

Hun Sen and his incompetent advisors sound so desperate. He should have strengthened the border at Preah Vihear long before the Thais invaded because the Thai extremists threatened to take Preah Vihear by force many times before. Now that Thailand occupied the areas 2 years already, so don't expect them to leave voluntarily. Cambodia has to do something like taking the issue to the UN or court or use force in order to force Thailand to withdrew its troops or negotiate seriously and sincerely.
