Senior U.S and Cambodian officials have begun bilateral talks for cooperation on the issues of climate change, food security and regional security cooperation, reports Radio Free Asia.
According to a statement from the U.S Embassy, the third annual talks between Mr. Scott Marciel, the U.S Assistant Secretary of State in charge of East Asia and the Pacific and Mr. Ouch Borith, Secretary of State of Cambodian Foreign Ministry, were focused on American aid to Cambodia and the implementation of the aid by the Cambodian government. "(They) discussed about U.S-Cambodian relations. There is no change in the $60 million annual American aid to Cambodia, which mainly for the health and education sectors. As for the military aid, both sides still have good relations with each other", Chrea Vannarith, American Embassy information officer.
According to the Cambodia Daily, Cambodia is among the 20 poorest countries which are entitled to receive parts of U.S development aid which totalled $22 billion annually. According to the U.S “Feed the Future” plan Cambodia is also entitled to receive credit assistance from the U.S Credit Fund of $100 million.
The talks also focused on the upcoming celebration of 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries which will held in July. The U.S Embassy also stressed that the current U.S-Cambodian diplomatic relations have reached maturity, especially in the last 10 years, despite some differences of opinions between the two countries.
