After failing to uproot border post number 23 on Saturday, the 1st May, a group of about 700 Thai ultra-nationalists had travelled to the border area in an attmpt to uproot said border post number 23 a second time, but they were again prevented from doing so by Thai troops, reports Deum Ampil.
On Saturday, Deum Ampil reported that about 500-700 marched to uproot border post number 23 near Ta Moan Toch temple in Oddar Meanchey province, but Thai border guards only allowed them to gather 300 metres from the border area. However, Gen. Chhum Socheat, spokesman for the Cambodian Defence Ministry, was quoted by Cambodian Express News to have put the number of Thai protesters at only about 180. Other sources put the number at 300.
On Sunday, the 2nd of May, there are reports that another group of 700 protesters, still led by the firebrand Veera Somkwamkid, returned to the area in another attempt to uproot border post number 23, but again, they were stopped by Thai troops personally commanded by Gen. Wiwalit Chornsamrit, commander of Thai Military Region Two and Gen. Chavalit, commander of Thai Division 6.
The report said that about 1,000 red shirt protesters and local villagers had tried to stop Mr. Veera's group at Ta Meang village in Langkat district in Surin province which led to small clashes between the two groups at 2pm. After the clashes, the yellow shirt protesters led by Mr. Veera dispersed and went their separate ways, said the report.
