Thai govt sacked four provincial governors for failing to prevent red shirt unrests

Everyday.com quoted a Bangkok Post report as saying that the Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry, Mr. Manit Wattanasaen, has signed an order on Tuesday to suspend the provincial governors of Kon Kaen, Uddorn Thani, Mukdahan and Ubon Ratchasima provinces from their duties for failing to prevent the red movement from rioting and cause turmoil in their provinces.

Mr. Manit said this is not a reshuffle and that the four governors are still effectively holding their positions. However, the Deputy Governors of both Kon Kaen and Uddorn Thani have been appointed acting governors in their provinces and the General Inspectors of Interior Ministry have been appointed as acting governors of Mukdahan and Ubon Ratchasima.

In the aftermath of the government crackdown on the red shirt protests in Bangkok, provincial buildings in these four northeastern provinces have been suspiciously burned down by the red shirt sympathisers.

The sackings or the suspensions of these four northeastern provincial governors happened after an unnamed Thai newspaper reported that many Thai citizens, mostly from the Laotian and Khmer ethnic groups, living in these provinces have returned their citizenship documents to the Thai authority saying they want to give up their Thai citizenship in protests against the recent deadly crackdown in Bangkok.
