Cambodian Foreign Ministry has on Sunday appealed to the Thai government to release a Cambodian worker who was arrested for allegedly participating in the red shirt protests and burning one building in Bangkok in the aftermath of the crackdown on the red protests on Wednesday last week, reports everyday.com.

Mr. Koy Kuong, spokesman for the Cambodian Foreign Ministry, said the Thai security forces wrongly arrested a Cambodian national who works at a coffee shop near the burning building. On Wednesday 19th May, he was just standing near his workplace to watch the burning building when he was arrested by the Thai security forces, said Mr. Koy Kuong. "We have asked the Abhisit government to release the (Cambodian) worker immediately. We cannot accept such an accusation (that he burned the building). I believe that such accusation was intended to cause problems with Cambodia", said Mr. Koy Kuong.

He said the Cambodian worker came from Battambang province and has worked legally in Thailand for 5 years, married with a (Thai) lady and had a child together. Mr. Koy Kuong denied that the man had participated in the red shirt protests, but that he was in the area because he works near the protest site. "The Cambodian Embassy in Bangkok is trying to find a lawyer to represent the arrested man", he said.

Late last week, the Cambodian Council of Ministers held a press conference to reject Thai media reports that the arrested man, 27 year-old Petch Saengmanee, was a Cambodian national.
